When a country is attacked it sometimes becomes necessary to defend
it. There may be no other choice but to fight. In sports one quickly
learns the difference between an offensive team and a defensive team. The
defensive team tries to prevent the offensive team from advancing and scoring
points against their team. The defensive team is not normally trying to score
points or advance toward their opponents goal, they are simply trying to defend
their own. War is similar to sports except there is more than points at stake.
Lives are lost in wars, including innocent lives. If you really think about it,
would the soldiers want to fight if they had a choice? I am sure some might,
but most probably would not. When talking about war try to remember the difference
between defending and offending.
If a country has a leader who cares nothing about his or her people would
bombing cities and killing innocent people mean anything to him or her? Some say
that the people should rise up and overthrow a leader like that. If it were
that easy for them don't you think they would? Placing yourself in their shoes,
what if you knew that if tried and failed, you or your family might be executed?
Would that change your decision? When you disagree with your leader how easy is it
for you to change anything? I do not think that it is right or beneficial to bomb
cities where innocent people live even if it is in the name of defense. Do you?
People normally assume their enemy is the country that is in disagreement
with their own. They consider the people living in that country their enemies
also. Sometimes this is far from the truth. For instance, if your government
decides that another country is bad because they have cut off trade are you
to blame? Likewise, are the people in the other country any more responsible for
the actions of their leaders than you are? Who is to blame? Are the soldiers
responsible? What if you didn't want to be a soldier but you did not have a
choice? The leaders of countries normally start wars whether the people living
their like it or not. In the end it is the people who suffer while those
responsible continue living their lives in safety. Is this fair? Would there
even be any wars if the leaders were on the front lines fighting?
The next time you hear about your country being involved in a war or
national dispute stop and think about who the enemies really are. Think about
who is going to suffer the most then decide for yourself whether your leader's
decision is right or wrong. When you put yourself in the other person's shoes
you will often find that things look a lot different.
