Preserving Our World

Save the environment

What's all the fuss about saving our environment? Who cares anyway? Everything seems to be ok, or does it? Will everything be ok 20 years from now? Sure, it can be, but only if we start working today to ensure that it will. People need air, land, and water to survive. Plants and animals are also necessary for survival. Careless loggers, strip miners, factories, and a number of other things work towards destroying our environment.

As factories, automobiles, and other things continue to pollute our air, people are breathing in many more harmful chemicals than they were several years ago. What can we do to prevent this? We need to ensure that our automobile's exhaust system is working properly. Even better, we could ride a bicycle if traveling a short distance or even walk. What about preventing pollution caused by factories? Factories need to be monitored closely by the Environmental Protection Agency, abbreviated E.P.A. You can help this agency by reporting any factory that seems to be violating the pollution laws.

Water pollution is killing our fish and making the water unsafe to drink. Factories often release toxic chemicals into our streams, lakes, and oceans. It is much cheaper for them to do this than dispose of these chemicals properly. We are responsible, once again, for helping the E.P.A. in locating these factories that violate the pollution laws. Are we "tattle tales" when we report these factories? Definitely not! When people endanger someone else's health or well being it's perfectly acceptable to report them. If we do not report them we become as guilty as they are for allowing it to continue.

Pollution and carelessness is destroying our environment. Loggers are reducing forests to barren wastelands. They sometimes replant trees but not always. Even if they do replant the trees, it takes a very long time for them to grow back. Some things can not be replaced. Strip miners and loggers often destroy rare plants. Some of these plants could possibly be used to cure certain diseases. When they're extinct the cure could be also. Many exotic animals are also in danger of extinction because of these careless practices. As we allow people to destroy our land, we are also allowing them to destroy many other valuable things as well. Things that can never be replaced. What can we do? Learn not to follow in these people's footsteps. Speak to your elected officials about preventing any further destruction. If you don't make an effort who will?

We can start making a difference by doing things differently than those before us have done. Convince people that we need to preserve our environment for our children and our grandchildren. Recycle paper, glass, plastic and other items so that we do not have to destroy our environment to get what we need. It takes every single one of us, working together, to protect and preserve our environment. If one person decides his or her efforts are unimportant, then another person does the same, and another, and yet another, soon there is only a handful left to be responsible for the concerns of us all. Your efforts may seem to go unnoticed, but if everyone sticks together, people will start to listen. Do your part and make a difference! It takes everyone combined to make a voice loud enough to be heard. Every voice is just as important as the next. Don't leave your voice out! It might be the one that makes a difference!
